Xochimilco Sundays

Day 6  04.01.18

On Easter Sunday, we made it out to the very south of the city and its “floating gardens.”  To be clear, Sunday is always the busiest day at Xochimilco–for thousands of Mexicans converge here to celebrate life, good weather, a birthday, or the simple pleasure of enjoying this ancient canal system in a colorful trajinera (gondola?).  If you’re looking for a quieter day at Xochimilco, don’t go on a Sunday.  But if you want to experience it with the locals at higher decibels, then a Sunday will work just fine.

IMG_2378Once you haggle for your boat, or trajinera, you’ll be led to the loading dock and soon join hundreds of others.  If you’re in the mood for a cerveza, some elote, chayotes, or a flower crown, simply inform the joven manning your trajinera, and he’ll make it happen.

Xochimilco is an especially great experience for larger groups.  We connected with some LA friends, requested our cubeta de cerveza and a few tequila shots, and we were off.
