After spending more than a week in Peru, we boarded a bus in Puno to cross the international border and experience the Bolivian side of El Lago Titícaca. After a somewhat nerve-racking border experience that involved hastily made copies of genuine and not so genuine documentation, we handed over our $120 to the Bolivian officials for our Visa and entry into their country.
A few hours later we arrived in Copacabana, and soon after that boarded a ferry to the Isla del Sol. If you’re traversing through the region, I definitely recommend experiencing this lovely island with a one or two night stay. There are plenty of comfortable accommodations available, and you’ll be able to take a break from the hustle and bustle of your travels to unwind just a bit.

- Garren and I enjoy the ferry ride to the Isla del Sol.
There are no automobiles on this island, so you’ll have to rely on your two feet. When you arrive at the dock, you’ll have to make your way up the island using the main walking path. This involves lots and lots of steps (at higher altitude than you’re probably used to), so we paid some young local men to carry our bags up to our lodging. If you opt for carrying your own bags, be ready to huff and puff and get in quite a bit of a workout.

- View of the dock. From here, you’ll climb up a series of steps to reach the very small town. Consider hiring one of the local men to carry your bags–cuz it’s quite a trek considering the higher altitudes.
Once you arrive to your lodging, plan to unwind and not do too much of anything. Take in the beautiful scenery, enjoy a delicious meal at one of the simple restaurants, go for a hike, take in the sun, and relax. This island feels worlds away from everything else–and it’s all the more gratifying after experiencing Machu Picchu, La Paz, or crossing the Peruvian-Bolivian border. 🙂

After enjoying a hike on one of the many island trails, we found a lovely place to enjoy lunch. Our Bolivian comida casera hit the spot, and the views were simply remarkable. You really couldn’t ask for anything more.

View from out outdoor lunch spot. Simply perfection.
