El Museo Anahuacalli is one of Mexico City’s hidden gems. The museum, completed after Diego Rivera’s death, is located in the south of the city. It is located roughly three miles from the heart of Coyoacán and that other more well known museum–La Casa Azul.
This Juan O’Gorman designed museum was built to house Diego Rivera’s impressive collection of prehispanic artifacts. The structure, built of volcanic black stone, is reminiscent of prehispanic temples. The hexagonal and rectangular arcs that serve as the entrances to the various showrooms recall Aztec and Mayan influences. Once inside, you’ll discover very dark and moody, with hints of whimsy, displays of prehispanic artifacts. The backlit displays really do a great job of highlighting these masterful pieces.
ABOVE RIGHT: My friend and I recreate a scene from the Netflix television series, Sense 8. We asked some random people to take the photo–no doubt they thought we were a bit weird–because we weren’t facing the camera and had our backs faced to them.
