Summer in Sevilla

A couple years ago, I spent a few very HOT days in Sevilla. Sevilla, the capital and largest city of Andalusia, is located in southern Spain–and just 50 miles (80 kilometers) from the Atlantic Ocean. I squeezed in a trip to Sevilla during a roughly two week holiday in Spain. For most of that trip, I was in Barcelona–enjoying the lovely beaches with friends and sipping on cool cocktails. I had always wanted to visit Sevilla, and I had a few days to spare before I needed to be back in Barcelona for a Björk concert–so I thought what the hell. Let’s do it!

Sevilla is a beautiful city, with an incredible history and mixture of cultures–owing to both the Moorish conquest and rule in the 8th century, as well as the Gitana and Flamenco culture prevalent in Southern Spain. With that being said, Sevilla is HOT HOT HOT in July and August. And because I happen to be there in July, I definitely felt it.

I spent mornings and evenings exploring this wonderfully delightful city–but mid-afternoons, when the sun and temperatures were at their highest, were spent at the hotel’s pool.

I was also determined to experience a live Flamenco show. I ended up finding a relatively small, intimate cultural center that had nightly performances. It was absolutely spellbinding–their voices, their dances, and their passion.

And one day I will return to lovely Sevilla… but I’ll make sure the temperatures are just a bit more cool.
