Angelino in Antigua

During the 2021 Summer, I spent a little more than a week in Guatemala. My brother was based in Guatemala City — so I thought it would be a great idea to explore a country I had yet to visit, and spend some time with my older brother as well. I flew into Guatemala City from Los Angeles, spent a night in the capital, then early the next day I hopped into an Uber for the relatively short ride to Antigua.

Antigua, first built in the 16th century, experienced a massive earthquake in 1773. Remnants of some of those original buildings, referred to as as “ruinas” or ruins, remain. Today, Antigua is a wondrous contrast to Guatemala City. This UNESCO World Heritage site and its cobblestoned streets, colonial architecture, remarkable ruinas, and rooftop terraces with views of the surrounding volcanoes will no doubt reenergize the weary traveler and inspire reflection.
