Maras / Moray

Two additional stops on our way to Ollantaytambo included Maras y Moray.  Since the times of the Incan Empire, locals have produced myriad types of salts at Maras.  The terraced salt ponds are located in a ravine with majestic hills and mountains surrounding the site.  Las Salineras de Maras are still in operation so one is not able to explore the entire site—but it is definitely worth a visit if you have some extra time.

Not too far from Maras is the town of Moray.  At Moray you’ll find these incredible, circular terraces that date back to the Incan Empire.  Although no longer In use for farming—it’s a clear example of the advanced agricultural techniques of the Incas.  The terraces although the locals to farm numerous types of crops—as temperatures varied by as much as 15 degrees from one location to another.
